iPod with (dead) stuck pixel replaced by Apple for free :D

As you might know if you have been reading this blog for a while, I got a free iPod Touch from Freepay.

However, my iPod had a very noticeable bright red dead stuck pixel right in the middle of it, which was annoying when I was watching movies. So, after a few months (yeah, I’m kinda lazy at times) I decided to contact Apple and get them to fix or repair the iPod Touch. Here, I am posting the steps I took to get the iPod replaced and how long it all took.

Firstly, I went to the UK Apple site, and found this page. I typed in the details it asked for (iPod’s Serial Number and my country). After that, I was told the status of my warranty – thankfully the iPod came with a year of free warranty.

After clicking on ‘Request online service’, I got to the part that said ‘Choose your service options’ – simply a few questions I had to answer about the problem with my iPod. I chose the correct options, and wrote a small explanation at the end (including what I had already done to try an solve the problem).

This was all done on the 9th August.

After this, I got an email explaining that the repair would probably be covered by the warranty, and that I would receive packaging in the post, that I would use to send my iPod to Apple.
Surely enough, 2 days later, I got a box in a bag from UPS. I put my iPod in the box, and used the UPS website to schedule a collection time for them to come and take my iPod back. They came the next day, on the 12th August.

After 2 days of missing my iPod, and wishing I could have it back, I got another email from Apple, saying that they had received my iPod Touch, and that they would notify me when the repair was complete. Within 24 hours, I got yet another email saying that they had replaced my iPod, and had sent it back to me. I should allow 2 working days for it to reach me.

Here’s a screen shot of my repair status:

Just 1 working day later, a UPS van pulled up outside our house, with a brand new iPod Touch for me! :D

So, all in all, I got a brand new iPod Touch within 4 working days of sending it off, and all just because of 1 single dead pixel :
Apple’s support system is great! :)
I have already jailbroken my iPod again, and am using all the apps I had before :)

So, I hope if any of you have a problem with your iPod Touch or iPhone, you’ll get in contact with Apple and get it sorted out as quickly as I did :)

How to get Apps from the App Store onto your iPod touch/iPhone for free!

Alright, I am finally writing the post I have been promising for a while. This is a tutorial explaining how to get (almost) any of the Apps in the App Store onto your iPod for free. You need to have a jailbreaked iPod/iPhone for this, and you must be running the 2.0 firmware or higher.

Here is a screen of all the apps i have in iTunes, and also on my iPod.

You need to be able to use SSH, which is explained here.

First of all, you must download any free app from iTunes and Sync it to your iPod. This is pretty simple, and most of you will have already done this anyway.
I had already downloaded a few free apps anyway, so this was fine. If you haven’t, just download the Facebook app or something.

Now, you need to change a file in your iPod, which is done via SSH.

Open your SSH client on your computer, and SSH to your iPod Touch/iPhone (as shown here)

In CyberDuck (or whatever application you’re using for SSH), browse to ‘/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework’

In this folder, there is a file called ‘MobileInstallation’. If you want, you can back up this file, and it’s probably a good idea to do so, in case anything goes wrong (which almost definitely won’t, but you never know…)
After backing it up, replace this file with the MobileInstallation file you downloaded. Once you have done that, you need to change the permissions of the file.
In CyberDuck, this is done by right-clicking on the file, and going to ‘Info’. In most programs it will be similar, if not the same.

The ‘Info’ page will open, giving you the option to change the name of the file, and the permissions. Change the permissions to 775, like below:

Some of the apps need a ‘Documents’ folder in the following directories:
“/Applications” and “/var/mobile”

Simply browse to these directories, create a folder called ‘Documents’ in each of them, and change the permissions of the ‘Documents’ folders to 777.

Once this has been done, you don’t need to do any more ‘SSH-ing’. Now you can do the easy part :D

Note: Restart your iPod now, before continuing!

To get the apps you want on your iPod Touch or iPhone, you just have to download their cracked versions somewhere from the Internet, and open them in iTunes. Then, you just sync your iPod/iPhone, and the apps will be on your iPod – it’s as simple as that!

But – where can you download the apps?
You can either download a torrent with 109 apps in it – Torrent link

Or, you can download them individually from RapidShare. This is good to test and see if they work, but it takes a long time if you don’t have a RapidShare Premium account.

Again, after downloading your apps, simply open them with iTunes, and sync to your iPod/iPhone. To sync the apps to your iPod/iPhone, make sure that your settings in iTunes are as below:

Using Google as a free MobileMe alternative (with push contacts & calendar)

For those who dont want to shell out the $99 for a MobileMe subscription, here’s a free alternative with support for push Contacts & Calendar on your iPod touch or iPhone, thanks to NuevaSync and Google.
(You’ll need the iPhone 2.0 software for this, if you havent upgraded already. Plug your device in and click ‘Check for Updates’ in iTunes)

NuevaSync is a new website which links Google Calendar and Contacts with their Exchange server, letting you sync your Google items with devices that support Microsoft Exchange.

First up, you’re going to need a Google Account (you’ll need a Gmail account if you wish to sync your contacts too.) if you dont already have one (Google Apps accounts work fine). You can sign up here.

Once that is done, NuevaSync reccommends you verify your account, by filling out a simple CAPTCHA.

How to take screenshots on iPod Touch or iPhone 2.0

Just thought I’d tell you how to take a screenshot on your iPod Touch or iPhone.

It is very simple, but you must have the 2.0 firmware installed.

Simply hold down the ‘Home’ button at the bottom of your iPod/iPhone, and at the same time, press the ‘Sleep’ button at the top of your iPod:

Your screen will turn white for a second, and then the screenshot has been saved!

Screenshots are saved in your iPod/iPhone’s Photo library. To see them, go into the ‘Photos’ app, and all your screenshots can be found in the ‘Saved Photos’ folder:

To get the screens on your computer, plug in your iPod, and open iPhoto to import the images. They will be in a .PNG format. Here is the screen shot that I took earlier:

SSH and iPhone / iPod Touch – An explanation, and how to use.

In one of my last posts, I said I’d be explaining how to use SSH to get iPhone/iPod Touch apps for free.
However, I decided that first I should explain what exactly SSH is, and how to use it on your iPod/iPhone. It took me a while to figure out how to use it, even with the vast amount of tutorials there are on the Internet. Hopefully this post will make it easier for you to use SSH.

What is SSH?

SSH stands for Secure SHell. It is used for modifying files on one system remotely from another. When using SSH with your iPod Touch/iPhone, you will be using SSH to modify the files on the iPod/iPhone from your computer.
This is done via WiFi, and there are a few applications with a decent GUI (Graphical User Interface) that you can use on both Mac and Windows for SSH.

Preparing to SSH to your iPod Touch or iPhone

Firstly, you must jailbreak your iPod or iPhone.

Now, download an application onto your computer for using SSH.
I would recommend CyberDuck or Fugu (both free) for Mac, and you can use CuteFTP on Windows, which unfortunately is not free, but you can use the trial version.

Once you have done that, go into Cydia or Installer on your iPod Touch/iPhone and download ‘OpenSSH’. This will enable your computer to modify files on your iPod/iPhone via WiFi.

Now open up ‘Settings’ on your iPod, and go to ‘Wi-Fi’ at the top. Make sure you are connected to a wireless network, and click on the small blue circle with an arrow inside it, which is next to the name or your network.

On the page that appears, you will find your iPod/iPhone’s IP address. Make a note of this, and now you can SSH into your iPod Touch/iPhone.

How to SSH to your iPod Touch or iPhone

Open the application on your computer that you’ll use for this. I’ll be using CyberDuck on a Mac, but for most applications the process is pretty much the same.
Click on ‘Open Connection’ to start.

Fill in as below.
Make sure the Protocol is set to ‘SFTP’, the server must be your iPod/iPhone’s IP address, Port is 22, username is ‘root’, and the default password is ‘alpine’.

Once you've got all the setting right, click Connect.

Once you've got all the settings right, make sure your iPod/iPhone is turned on and click Connect.

The first time you do this, it might take a short while to connect, but after this it should be a lot quicker.
Once it is done, you will be able to see all the files in your iPod Touch or iPhone, and you can modify these to change stuff like the Wallpaper or battery images on your iPod.

Knowing how to do this might not seem so useful now, but soon I’ll be posting on how to use SSH to get apps from the App Store for free.
